What to know about selling delivery gift cards

Delivery gift cards cover rides, takeout and groceries brought to your door. They are a thoughtful gift for new parents, students, busy workers and people recovering at home, and companies often send them as a thank you. But delivery services are local. If a service does not cover your area, or you simply prefer to drive, cook or shop in person, a delivery card can go unused for months.

Most delivery gift cards are digital. They arrive by email with a code in the message or on a linked page, and the email often includes a button that redeems the code straight into your account. If you plan to sell, copy the code and do not press that button. Once a delivery code is added to an account, the credit is locked to that account.

Physical delivery cards sold in stores usually have the code on the back under a scratch-off strip. Keep the packaging and receipt with the card until the sale is done.

Be careful with the difference between a gift card and a promotion. Promo codes, referral credits, membership trials and credit loaded onto your account by an employer are not gift cards and cannot be sold. A real gift card has its own code and a fixed value printed on it or shown in its email.
