What to know about selling retail gift cards
Retail gift cards cover the stores people visit every week, from online shopping on Amazon to a quick stop at CVS or a weekend browse at T.J.Maxx. They are given as birthday presents, holiday gifts, work rewards and return credits. Because they are so common, many people end up holding store credit for a place they rarely shop.
Retail cards come in two main styles. Some, like Amazon and Apple, use a single claim code hidden under a scratch-off strip or label. Others, like Best Buy, Target, CVS, Dollar General and the TJX family of stores, use a card number plus a separate PIN or access number. Each brand page on this site explains exactly where to find the details on your card, so you can have them ready before you open the bot.
Many store cards can be checked on the store's official website or at a register without spending them. Code-based cards like Amazon and Apple are different: entering the code into your account usually redeems it. Before you check anything, read the balance tip on your brand page so you do not use up the card by accident.
The TJX family deserves a special mention. T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Homesense, Sierra and TJX multi-brand cards all belong to the same program in the US, which means a card from one store usually works at the others. Each has its own page here, with links between them.
